Letter to the Editor: Consumers losing outKnoxville News-Sentinel4/13/2009 Knoxville News-Sentinel April 13, 2009 Monday LETTERS TO THE EDITOR With regard to the issue of the sale of wine in grocery stores, I am stating my view on the subject. In limiting the sale of wine to liquor stores, it is the customer who loses out. I am sure that some customers have no problem driving to the nearest liquor store to purchase wine for dinner, entertaining, as a hobby, etc., but it is an inconvenience to most customers. Not only do those customers have to make the extra time and effort to drive to the liquor store, but they also to spend extra dollars on the gas that takes them there. The change in the law would certainly affect the profits of most of the liquor stores in the area as well as their employees, but this state should not be in the business of protecting those few businesses and employees at the expense of the general population who are the very customers who patronize these businesses in the fi rst place. As far as keeping wine out of the hands of minors, every single time that I have gone to the grocery store and purchased beer, I have been asked for my ID. Where is the proof that selling wine in a grocery store will increase underage drinking? I highly doubt that proof exists unless someone or some group makes it up. And, if the purchasing of wine in the county I live in will benefi t that county, that is all the more reason to allow the grocery stores in those counties to sell it. I hope it passes.
